How to Calculate Break-Even Point
The break-even point is the number of units a business must sell so that total revenue exactly covers total costs. Below this point the business operates at a loss; above it every additional unit generates profit.
Break-Even Formula
Break-even is calculated by dividing total fixed costs by the contribution margin per unit:
Break-Even Revenue = Break-Even Units × Selling Price
Example: £10,000 fixed costs, £30 variable cost, £50 selling price
→ 10,000 ÷ 20 = 500 units, 500 × £50 = £25,000 revenue
Understanding Contribution Margin
The contribution margin is the amount each unit contributes toward covering fixed costs. It is calculated as the selling price minus the variable cost per unit. The contribution margin ratio shows this as a percentage of the selling price.
A higher contribution margin means fewer units are needed to break even. For detailed contribution margin analysis, use our contribution margin calculator.
Break-Even Analysis for Business Planning
Break-even analysis is one of the most practical tools in financial planning. It helps businesses make informed pricing decisions by showing exactly how many units must sell at a given price. It is equally useful when evaluating new products, as you can model different cost structures before committing resources. Investors and lenders look at break-even to assess business viability, while sales teams use it to set realistic revenue targets.
